Pass Plays: Pick up Christian Ponder
A number of running backs and pass-catching options could have more value soon
In his 2004 Chairman's Letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders, Warren Buffett passed along a piece of time-tested advice regarding investing: "Try to be fearful when others are greedy and greedy only when others are fearful."
That admonition is just as useful in the world of fantasy football. With all of the injuries, quarterback benchings and bye weeks occurring, many fantasy football owners are either going to be fearful or greedy.
The key to successfully navigating those emotional waters is to know which players should make you greedy and which ones should make you fearful. This week's Pass Plays will aim to help with that.
Most fantasy owners' greed will be directed toward acquiring DeMarco Murray because of his 253-yard rushing performance on Sunday.
While Murray may be a good acquisition, the truth of the matter is that his dominant numbers were as much as result of the lousy St. Louis Rams run defense as anything. That defense has allowed the second-highest amount of fantasy points to running backs. Some might call that a function of teams building leads and piling up rush totals late, but the Rams cover the gambit, sitting last in the league in total rush yards allowed, rush yards per game and rush yards per attempt.
That means one would do better to acquire running backs that are due to face this defense in the future. Candidates along that line include:
Alfonso Smith, available in 99.9 percent of ESPN leagues
He could be filling in for an injured Beanie Wells in the Cardinals' Week 9 contest against the Rams. Wells could also be a good buy-low candidate for Arizona's Week 12 matchup against St. Louis.
Montario Hardesty, available in 45.6 percent of ESPN leagues
