Injuries are part of the game, a fact you undoubtedly have heard a bajillion times before and never needed to be reminded of in the first place. But when they bushwhack your fantasy hoops squad, exactly how are you supposed to deal with them?

Unlike football and baseball, in which positions are more clearly defined and playing time is more compartmentalized, basketball has a spread-the-wealth and take-all-comers approach to filling in for the infirm. A Priest Holmes-Larry Johnson-style handcuff-draft strategy doesn't apply in NBA fantasy leagues. And there is no hoops equivalent to Huston Street picking up the pieces in Oakland after Octavio Dotel's elbow explosion. NBA teams spackle holes in the lineup by playing a starter a few extra minutes, giving a rotation guy a few more shots and blessing some dude working on a 10-day contract with five minutes of floor time instead of a DNP. The alteration of the league's injury list rules -- and the subsequent inability to stash an ailing star -- is just the latest hurdle fantasy owners have to clear.
