Playing With Numbers: Reassessing value
Although it's been said many times, many ways, most people tend to ignore the most important factor when playing fantasy baseball: We do not play with names, we play with numbers. In a standard 4X4 league, you do not get any extra points for having a first-ballot Hall of Famer on your roster as opposed to a no-frills player getting his first chance at a starting job. All that matters is how many hits, how many home runs, how many RBIs and how many stolen bases a player accumulates over the course of the season. There is something to be said for a player having a track record of success, but past performance never guarantees future performance, and it never ceases to amaze me when a decent trade proposal not only gets turned down, but causes the other owner to be insulted by the mere mentioning of a player like David Murphy or Conor Jackson in the same breath as his beloved Vladimir Guerrero.
