Peguero heats up; the next Pedroia?
Notes from Sunday's minor league games
Matching the heat of the desert
Carlos Peguero, OF, Mariners (High-A High Desert)
Sunday's stats: 3-for-5, 3B, HR (13), 3 R, 3 RBI, K
Peguero is the kind of guy that just looks like he should be good. The 22-year-old Dominican is 6-foot-5, strong as an ox and a good athlete for his size. At the same time, a swing-at-anything approach has held him back so far. After hitting 12 home runs for High Desert last year, Peguero has already passed that total in only 56 games this season, and is especially hot of late, slugging .698 this month with four home runs and 13 RBIs in 12 games.
Not THAT good, but good
Eric Sogard, 2B, Padres (Double-A San Antonio)
Sunday's stats: 2-for-4, 2B, R
An undersized second baseman who starred at Arizona State, Sogard therefore draws the occasional lazy comparison to Dustin Pedroia, which just isn't fair. Still, he's a solid player with top-of-the-order skills, including a line-drive bat and a very patient approach that has him batting .386 in his past 15 games and .296/.397/.402 overall. Add in the fact that he's one of those guys who just does all the little things right and he could be making a run at a big league look sometime next year.
