We're sorry Fernando, maybe we were wrongFernando Martinez, OF, Mets (Triple-A Buffalo)
Sunday's stats: 3-for-4, 2B, HR (3), 3 RBI
During last week's daily reports, I took a bit of a shot at Martinez during a 1-for-18 slump, saying simply at some point the guy has to start performing as opposed to living off a reputation. It's great how early in the season just a few games of production can turn around one's numbers, and Martinez has done just that, delivering a double and a home run on both Friday and Sunday, and in the last four days, his OPS has risen 161 points with a triple-slash (average/on-base/slugging) line of .287/.330/.529. It's hard to argue with his tools, and he still might be lined up for a real look in 2010.
Just turn your head andChris Coghlan, 2B, Marlins (Triple-A New Orleans)
Sunday's stats: 4-for-5, HR (1), 3 R, 4 RBI, BB, 2 SB
Let's face it, be it at the trade deadline or the upcoming offseason or some time in the future, Dan Uggla is going to get traded. When that happens, Coghlan is going to step into the second base job. A supplemental first-round pick out of Mississippi in 2006, Coghlan doesn't have anything close to Uggla's power, but he has the ability to hit for average while drawing a ton of walks, and by going 10-for-16 with five walks in his last four games, he's hitting .321/.394/.464 for the Zephyrs and appears nearly ready for a look.
