Hey gang, let's revisit a stat I created last year, pitching power ratio. The concept is rather simple, reward pitchers for striking out batters and for keeping the ball down. The formula is (strikeouts + (groundouts / 3) (air outs / 3)) / innings pitched.
If you keep hitters from putting the ball in the air, you'll reduce the number of extra-base hits you allow, especially home runs. And, of course, it's almost impossible to reach base if you strike out, and strikeouts are the most powerful and accurate representation of a pitcher's dominance. Rather than run a bunch of traditional superstars generated by pitching power ratio, I thought I'd tab some guys who still might be available in trades or from the waiver wire. Most haven't had incredible seasons to date, and some haven't pitched enough to appear on the radar of many of your potential foes. I've broken the list into two groups: potential reliever grabs and potential starting-pitcher grabs. (Note: Only some of the players get expanded write-ups.)
The wrinkle I added is that these stats are from June 1 through July 29. Some players, such as Derek Lowe, are on a tear right now and their stats are much better in this stretch than they were earlier in the season. You can use this knowledge to serve you better during trade talks.
