Oakland on the Offensive

Billy Beane, the Oakland A's general manager, is often looked at as a baseball innovator, who took something of a fantasy approach to running a baseball team. Instead of using the concepts of tools or makeup, he looked at what players did statistically. Did a player walk or hit for power? Beane used the numbers to find out what kind of player he was drafting or signing. This new approach has made the Oakland A's a very competitive team despite low payrolls; they have finished first or second in the AL West every year since 1999. The Athletics are using the same approach this season with their lineup, which will likely produce some big fantasy seasons.
