FLB: Rookie Report

Each week, the Rookie Report takes a look at the most prominent recent additions to major-league rosters, as well as players who recently made their debuts. Melky Cabrera, OF, Yankees: If this is a familiar name to you, it should be, as Cabrera was the man who patrolled center field for the Yankees in a one-week experiment last July once the team realized Bernie Williams no longer had the range to handle the position. (And thus, the seeds of the Johnny Damon signing were planted.) Back then, Cabrera was up because the team wanted to see what he could do; this time, he's up because the team felt it had to promote him to fill the injured Gary Sheffield's role. The Yankees have already said Cabrera will play regularly while he's in the majors, after he batted an International League-best .385 at Triple-A Columbus, so in deeper AL-only leagues, he's worth a look. Still, let's not overlook that he's just 21 years old, meaning he's probably a couple years away from a big fantasy impact, and perhaps only after he's included in a deadline deal. Long term, I'm thinking he could just as easily be the next Ricky Ledee as the next Bernie Williams, which some hopeful Yankee fans believe.
