• Barry Bonds hit his first home run of the season, the 704th of his major-league career, and more significantly, his 693rd "as an outfielder," breaking the major-league record for career homers from that position, which he shared with Babe Ruth.
In addition to his homers as an outfielder, Bonds has eight as designated hitter and three as a pinch-hitter. Ruth is credited with 692 homers as an outfielder, 14 as a pitcher, seven as a first baseman and one as a pinch-hitter.
The all-time leader in homers at other positions: Mark McGwire at first base (556), Jeff Kent at second (304), Mike Schmidt at third (509), Cal Ripken at shortstop (345), Mike Piazza behind the plate (372), Wes Ferrell on the mound (37) and Edgar Martinez as a designated hitter (243).
