A daily glance inside the numbers from the world of sports:

Major League Baseball

• On Saturday night, Chris Carpenter became the first 20-game winner in the majors this season. Since 1900, only three other Cardinals pitchers were the "first to 20" in the majors leagues in a given year: Dizzy Dean, who did it in each of three consecutive seasons (1934, 1935 and 1936), Mort Cooper (1942) and Joaquin Andujar (1985).

• Carpenter is the seventh different pitcher to win 20 games in a season for Tony La Russa. He joins LaMarr Hoyt, Richard Dotson, Dave Stewart, Bob Welch, Darryl Kile and Matt Morris. Only two other managers who debuted in the last 50 years had at least seven different 20-game winners: Earl Weaver had nine (Cuellar, McNally, Palmer, Dobson, Torrez, Garland, Flanagan, Stone and McGregor) and Billy Martin had seven (Perry, Boswell, Lolich, Coleman, Jenkins, Norris and Guidry).
