NFL
• The Texans signed North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams on Friday, making him the first overall selection in the 2006 NFL draft. In the past 20 years, five defensive players were chosen with the first overall pick: Aundray Bruce (1988), Russell Maryland (1991), Steve Emtman (1992), Dan Wilkinson (1994) and Courtney Brown (2000). Those five players combined to earn one Pro Bowl selection (Maryland for Dallas in 1993).
