Karabell: Week 7 flex rankings

Sometimes desperation sets in and you don't have a choice.

A colleague asked me this morning what I thought of a few trade offers he had received. Well, none of them looked particularly advantageous for him, but when he told me his top running backs for this week, due to bye weeks and injuries, are Derrick Ward, Chris Brown and Sammy Morris, it adjusted the stakes. Trading Santonio Holmes for Donald Brown might not seem like a great move. In fact, you'll see below that I ranked Holmes considerably better, and that's a trend that's likely to continue as long as Joseph Addai looks rejuvenated. But in this owner's case, I didn't see much choice.

In fantasy football, extenuating circumstances can alter decision-making at any time. Half the trades I've made this season were for need rather than want, moves made because of a lack of depth, in reaction to an injury or to sell high on someone I knew I needed to react fast on. That's one of the good things about having a flex spot in your league. Most of the time, you get to simply choose your best option at running back or wide receiver, or sometimes even tight end. It's one player or the other. Make a choice. That flexibility is nice. Making trades based on rankings is a dangerous way to go, because often there is more to think about than just which player is preferred.
