Wednesday's rumor of the day in the fantasy football community centered on Brandon Marshall trade talks with the New York Jets. Since I discussed Marshall's dropping value in one of Tuesday's KaraBlogs, I thought it would be prudent to mention how I wouldn't really like him any better in Jets green.
Look, changing places from Colorado to New Jersey doesn't make Marshall any less of a walking, running, leaping time bomb, and I maintain early in a fantasy draft you need to minimize risk. I was in a draft earlier Wednesday in which Marshall really fell. We all appeared skittish on risking a top-50 pick on this guy, and for good reason. It seems to me drafters just don't know what to do with this guy. Potential trade talks between the Broncos and, well, everyone are being denied at this point, and don't change his value.
I don't think the Jets will pony up the draft picks the Broncos would want in return, but I also think it's irrelevant. Marshall is a very talented football player, a clear top-10 wide receiver if we were sure he wanted to perform like one. Maybe the Jets or Ravens or some other team find a way to acquire him, give him a shiny, new long-term contract and all seems temporarily well ... or maybe he gets himself suspended again. Plaxico Burress in New York, how did that work out? Marshall in New York -- north New Jersey, whatever! -- with a rookie quarterback doesn't make me feel any better about his fantasy plight.
