Many of you are already trying to figure out your fantasy baseball keeper situations, which are great, but try being in a league that starts its draft ... this week! That's right, I have a league like this, and we've already chopped down to our keepers and will be drafting a few rounds every few weeks, starting this Friday. I love the format, because there is no offseason. Then again, some would argue that's precisely what fantasy owners need, a long offseason. Not me.
In this league, when the season ends we're not talking so much about whom we kept, but more about whom is available to draft, and it not only sparks much trade talk for keepers or draft picks, it keeps everyone involved. You can take October off, but that's about it. Well, I love baseball and fantasy baseball, so I don't need much time off. You're constructing a team, especially in deeper formats and ones in which the so-called normal fantasy stats aren't everything, and one day of drafting doesn't do it justice. Draft day is great, so why not expand it to a bunch of smaller on-line draft days? My league is spending far more time debating David Eckstein this week than the injury to potential NFL rookie of the year Adrian Peterson. That's just fine!
While doing research for this league, which of course helps with general knowledge of the game and gets me prepared for all my other leagues and my offseason blogs, it became obvious that with so many situations in baseball far from determined, you're taking a chance drafting certain players with good draft picks this early. Of course, most of you will draft in March, but is this really true with the superstars? To me, it doesn't really matter what happens with Alex Rodriguez. He'll hit anywhere. But here are other free agents in which it could matter in fantasy. Of course, by the next time I blog about baseball, some of these situations could be settled, but with free agency officially under way, it's topical!
