Down DH season turning around?

A year ago, fantasy baseballers not only paid a lot more attention to what designated hitters were doing, but actually enjoyed owning them. The American League home run leaderboard was DH-heavy, with five of the top seven home run hitters being primary DHs, and while these guys got another year older for 2007, who thought there would be this much of a collective dropoff?

This year the production is way down at the DH spot, with more fantasy owners complaining than enjoying. Will David Ortiz have a big September? What's wrong with Travis Hafner? Time to stick a fork in Frank Thomas?

Wednesday was a big night for designated hitters, as Ortiz swatted a pair of home runs against the Devil Rays, knocking in all of his team's runs in a walk-off win. Jim Thome smacked home run No. 499, meaning his next bat could be an historic one, and Gary Sheffield finally made fantasy owners want him again by homering, after managing one measly single in 27 post-DL at-bats entering play Wednesday.
