Values for Schmidt, Halladay, etc.

How can two pitchers completely change their fantasy value from just one night? Well, in the case of Jason Schmidt and Roy Halladay, they certainly did. I'm happy to report I was, at least for one night, absolutely correct, but whenever you deal with starting pitchers, you have about four days to act before the next time they pitch. Then it could all change again!

Schmidt looked terrific against the Padres, allowing one hit in six scoreless innings, but more importantly that missing velocity from early April was suddenly back. I'm not sure Schmidt was throwing this hard last season, for that matter. Do I trust Schmidt? I picked him to win the Cy Young back in the spring, and I think that train is long gone, but could Schmidt win in double digits from here on out with an ERA below 3.00? You betcha.

Meanwhile, a few days after shutting down the struggling White Sox for six hits, no walks and no runs over seven innings, Halladay got obliterated Tuesday by the Devil Rays. Again, like we were saying about Felix Hernandez lately, these were not dinky little squibbers that found holes; this was an undisciplined Rays team pounding a supposed top-five pitcher. While some can debate whether Halladay got lit up before the appendectomy because of symptoms related to that ailment, there's no debating what happened Tuesday. Halladay says he feels fine and this is just a mechanics issue, whatever that means. There are also reports he's been throwing his famed cutter again, but how does one explain one really good outing, and one really bad one? I need to see more starts to make an opinion on Halladay, but consider me concerned about his 2007.
