Man, this Jason Schmidt injury hits me hard. It's not that it shocks me too much, since I am well aware that a pitcher who normally throws in the mid-90s doesn't drop 10 mph for no reason. Something had to be wrong. I just kept telling myself it was no big deal, he's smart enough to adapt, he's got that home ballpark going for him, he did it last season, you name it.
Schmidt was placed on the disabled list Tuesday night. The results of the MRI on his shoulder showed bursitis in the pitching shoulder, which doesn't end careers, so it's not a situation in which fantasy owners should panic. Schmidt won't pitch the rest of the month and, for all we know, he might gain some velocity when May begins and get back on track. Fantasy owners shouldn't really bother floating his name in trade talks, I can't imagine someone getting proper value.
Why does this hit me harder than the Alfonso Soriano injury? I don't own Soriano anywhere. I thought other fantasy owners were overvaluing him, and in order for me to take him in a draft, at the spot I would need to, I'd need to go against what I felt. Soriano missing a week is no big deal in the big picture anyway. The Schmidt injury is worse because it's possible we'll never see the 2006 Schmidt again.
