Benson's big day wasn't all about revenge

Don't misinterpret Cedric Benson's 37-carry day as just a effort to show up the Chicago Bears.

The Bengals didn't plan to give Benson 37 carries in their 45-10 win, but they had little choice. Once they got a big lead, the Bengals wanted to run the ball. Unfortunately for them, they ran out of running backs. Brian Leonard was inactive. Backup Bernard Scott was banged up, so he couldn't take over. That left Benson, who wanted to show his former team it made a mistake in releasing him. He didn't mind the heavy workload.

Edwards update: Bills quarterback Trent Edwards will try to practice this week, but his concussion problems will keep him out of the Week 8 game against Houston. There is no timetable for his return, but you figure if he's practicing this week, he could be ready by Week 9. Ryan Fitzpatrick may have excited Bills fans by being involved in Buffalo's past two victories, but don't go overboard on his impact. The Bills beat Carolina Sunday, but they had only 167 yards of total offense.

No-brainer for Singletary: 49ers coach Mike Singletary had no choice in changing quarterbacks and making Alex Smith the full-time starter over the struggling Shaun Hill. Hill doesn't have the arm strength to get the ball downfield. Smith does. Singletary said the Texans were putting seven and eight players in the box to stop the run. Hill's lack of arm strength couldn't force Houston's defense out of those stacked situations.
