BRATISLAVA, Slovakia -- As the U.S. begins the process of auditions for a possible starting World Cup forward slot this week, the one feeling that seems to have prevailed among all others is the candidates' sense of appreciation at the opportunity.

Coach Bob Bradley called up regular starter Jozy Altidore and three other forwards in search of a replacement for Charlie Davies, who is recovering from severe injuries sustained in an auto accident last month.

"It's inspiring just to be here," says FC Dallas striker Jeff Cunningham, a 33-year-old vet who earned the chance with a remarkable year that started with him on the bench and ended with him leading MLS in scoring with 17 goals. "I really felt like I was on my last legs the first half of the season. It was an unbelievable turnaround and for me to be rewarded with the opportunity in camp is just amazing."
