I am a basketball purist, so I understand and appreciate that when it's played at its best, the sport is the ultimate team game. In fact, I've often compared a great basketball team to a great jazz band. You have to play together to make the music sound complete, but there's a certain amount of individual improvising -- like one-on-one play in basketball -- that creates excitement as well.
So, while too much attention can heaped on individual matchups in basketball, there are times that utilizing or containing a great player is the difference in the outcome of a game. When two great players meet up, it generates that little extra buzz that makes watching hoops so great.
