Cable appears safe for now

Tom Cable's status as the Raiders' head coach is still under review, but the fact that he ran the team's bye week practice indicates the Raiders aren't ready to fire him yet.

The organization is closely looking at the allegations that Cable has a history of violent behavior toward women as well as his alleged incident with a Raiders assistant coach. It's not out of the question Cable, who is 2-6 this season, could end up losing his job, but the odds lean toward him staying on -- at least for now.

Another setback for Steelers: News that defensive end Travis Kirschke suffered a torn calf that could sidelined him three weeks is a big blow to the Steelers. With Aaron Smith gone for the season and Kirschke out temporarily, the Steelers have three of their five 30-plus-year-old defensive linemen injured. The player they can't afford to lose is nose tackle Casey Hampton, who plays slightly more than 50 percent of the defensive snaps.
