Ed.'s note: Keith Law is appearing on the 9 p.m. "SportsCenter Special" regarding the MLB draft. His thoughts on the first round and sandwich picks will be available on ESPN.com's MLB page later Tuesday night.
Jason Churchill:
Texas gets their big-ticket power arm in
Tanner Scheppers, who was the 48th pick last year by Pittsburgh. It could be the steal of the draft if he stays healthy; he has better stuff than any arm in the draft except for
Stephen Strasburg. The thing to watch for will be his price; Scheppers is expected to be somewhat expensive, potentially in the $4 million range. Pittsburgh gets a power arm in
Victor Black out of Dallas Baptist, and Milwaukee tabs Kennesaw State RHP
Kyle Heckathorn, who could move to the pen and slither through the minors quickly. The best players remaining as the second round begins include 1B
Rich Poythress, C
Luke Bailey, RHPs
Alex Wilson and
Ben Tootle and prep OF
Jake Marisnick.
You will be able to find continued analysis and expectations for each team's selections in the MLB draft by going to the MLB Draft Blog and ESPN.com's MLB page for the rest of the week.
