The Diamondbacks continue to lose game after game after game, and the timing could not be worse for new manager A.J. Hinch, who had his first confrontation with a player -- pitcher Doug Davis -- on Friday night, Nick Piecoro writes.
Because he has never coached or managed at any level, there inevitably will be questions in some corners of the Arizona clubhouse about whether Hinch is capable of handling the job -- and as long as the Diamondbacks struggle, those questions and doubts will fester. It is part of the risk of hiring someone without a managerial résumé.
Whether those questions are legitimate or whether they represent convenient excuses for struggling players is irrelevant in the end. The only thing that matters is that Hinch succeeds, and he probably is operating with much less benefit of the doubt from his players than someone who has experience.
