Peter Keating
Peter Keating is a senior writer at ESPN The Magazine, covering investigative and statistical subjects. He also coordinates The Magazine's annual "Ultimate Standings" project, which ranks all pro franchises according to how much they give back to fans. Keating grew up in Sayville, N.Y., a 90-minute train ride from Madison Square Garden, where he and his friends used to scream for Bernard King from the cheap seats. As an athlete, Keating has always combined the speed of Lou Piniella with the glove work of Dave Kingman, two other childhood favorites. A rabid Giants fan since the days of Rob Carpenter and Joe Danelo, he was at the Meadowlands in December 1998 when Amani Toomer nabbed a game-winning catch to beat the previously 13-0 Broncos, and high-fived a stranger so hard that he lost his wedding ring. He lives in Montclair, N.J., with his wife, Karen (a Jets fan), and their daughters, Eleanor and Samantha.
