• The Mets' signing of Francisco Rodriguez comes as a relief, writes Mike Lupica. But the Mets need more help than K-Rod to fix their mess, writes John Harper.

• The new proposal between the Cubs and the Padres involves pitcher Jason Marquis going from Chicago to San Diego, writes Paul Sullivan. Such a deal would give the clearest indication yet of just how desperate the Padres are to cut payroll. The Padres are looking at Angel Guzman, too.

• Mark Teixeira is the primary target of the Red Sox. Heard this: As the sides are discussing concepts, the Nationals have indicated a willingness to do something in the eight-year, $160 million range; the Red Sox have not gone that far yet.

He graduated from Vanderbilt University the same year as hoops legend Will Perdue, and ranks among the all-time leading scorers in pickup basketball at Memorial Gym. He claims to have witnessed the Commodores' winning football season in 1982 (although anthropologists have not yet confirmed this).
