Phillies aren't likely to make big changes

Ruben Amaro didn't get to the general managers meetings in Dana Point until late Monday night, after being introduced as the Phillies' new general manager, and there is a lot of work to be done, particularly in the reconstruction of the front office, now that Mike Arbuckle has left the Philadelphia organization.

But the Phillies really don't figure to make many changes. They'll probably make some form of a one-year offer to Jamie Moyer, who may be looking for more than that; odds are that the Phillies will hold the line in those negotiations, given that Moyer will turn 46 in two weeks. And they'll probably make a two-year offer to Pat Burrell, but sources don't expect the team to go beyond that.

The overriding personnel issue for the Phillies won't take place until late in the offseason, when Ryan Howard -- fresh off a record-setting $10 million arbitration award last winter -- will once again be arbitration-eligible. The Phillies are expected to explore more talks with Howard's representatives on a long-term deal, but there is uncertainty within the organization about whether that will lead anywhere.
