Pennington to the rescue in Miami

The signing of Chad Pennington by the Miami Dolphins shows they were not sold on any of their quarterbacks. Head coach Tony Sparano and offensive coordinator Dan Henning must have seen enough of seven-year veteran Josh McCown, second-year signal-caller John Beck and rookie Chad Henne to realize that acquiring a seasoned veteran like Pennington would give the rebuilding Dolphins their best chance to move forward in 2008.

McCown is with his fourth club in seven years -- not exactly a ringing endorsement to his skills as a starter. He has good size and has flashed ability as a downfield passer, but he's inconsistent under pressure. Beck is from the old Dolphins regime and has little experience. He has average size and solid arm strength, but he appears to be a work in progress. Henne is a good athlete with a big arm. While the Dolphins see great potential in him, they realized it wouldn't be smart to throw him to the wolves just yet.
