The Mariners made an aggressive move for a frontline starting pitcher in the offseason, landing Erik Bedard, and they began the season thinking they had a chance to overtake the Angels. Instead, their own race was effectively over by the end of May, and their general manager and manager were fired.
But there is still opportunity for Seattle in 2008, because their 2009, 2010 and 2011 seasons can start to take shape, depending on what they do over the next three days. The Mariners must treat the next 78 hours as an opportunity.
