• As lightweight champion
Joel Casamayor's deadline nears to sign a contract to face
Nate Campbell in a mandatory fight, all I can say is that I hope Casamayor does the right thing and accepts the bout. Both guys would make $610,000 based on
Don King's winning purse bid. That would be by far Campbell's biggest purse, and he wants the fight. It's good money, too, for Casamayor, who has had only a few bigger purses. Moreover, it's the right fight for boxing, the lightweight division and fight fans, not to mention that it would be rematch of an excellent first fight that Casamayor won via competitive decision in 2003.
Casamayor is the Ring champion, the recognized champion, the lineal champion, whatever you want to call him (not to mention that he was wrongly stripped of the WBC belt). Campbell also has a claim on the title because he owns three sanctioning organization straps after a convincing decision win in March against
Juan Diaz, considered by most as the best lightweight out there when they fought. The winner of Casamayor-Campbell II will be the clear champion, with no arguments whatsoever.
