Posted by Share your favorite 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass
I was always one of those students, from elementary school all the way through college, who enjoyed studying in groups or working on projects with other classmates more than any solo pursuit in education. Maybe it was the camaraderie and social nature of such an endeavor; maybe I simply saw these situations as opportunities to complete a much smaller percentage of the given assignment. (It's probably a little of the former and a whole lot of the latter.)
In any case, my request seeking readers' favorite non-major championship PGA Tour venues was met with such success last week that I felt compelled to share my assignment once again. Your homework this time: I'm looking for the best stories about the famed par-3 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass, site of this week's Players Championship.
Other than that, there are no rules. Your favorite tale might be of a golfing buddy who dumped a dozen Titleists everywhere but on the island green or it might be of seeing Fred Couples rinse his tee shot at the 1999 Players, only to hole out from the drop area for par. The more creative your storytelling is, the better chance you have of getting your entry posted later this week.
My best story? Well, it's not mine, really, but I'll be writing later this week on the man who once earned the title, America's Worst Avid Golfer, and though I won't give away the entire story for those who don't know it yet, let's just say the 17th hole and the number 66 are both prominently involved. Our other pre-tournament coverage will include a piece from Bob Harig, in which he'll gather the best facts, stats and quotes about No. 17.
With that in mind, it's time to start typing. We all have a homework assignment to complete and you know I'll need all the help I can get. Just
