Don't expect to see anything happen quickly with Chiefs franchise player Jared Allen. If the Chiefs trade him, it could have a major impact on the draft. With the No. 5 pick, it makes sense for the Chiefs to take a defensive end such as Chris Long or Vernon Gholston. Either would make more sense than Boise State tackle Ryan Clady or another top offensive linemen. Other than Jake Long the top offensive linemen will likely go after the 10th pick. If the Chiefs are able to get a first- and third-round choice for Allen, they would be in position to take an offensive lineman and a pass-rushing end. The problem? The Chiefs will try to hold out for two first-rounders. The Chiefs want to get young by rebuilding through the draft. Clearly, the Vikings will have interest in Allen. He is making his first stop in Minneapolis. It might be tough for the Chiefs to sign Allen to a long-term deal. Regardless, the Allen situation will continue to be intriguing for the Chiefs.
Receivers wanted: If the Bengals want to trade wide receiver Chad Johnson -- which they don't -- it won't be hard to find takers. The Cowboys, Eagles and Raiders are among several teams who have expressed interest in the Pro Bowl veteran. At a function in Dallas Wednesday, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told reporters he's looking for a veteran receiver. The problem is Johnson, Roy Williams in Detroit and Lee Evans in Buffalo aren't being shopped.
Ravens seek quarterback: As general manager Ozzie Newsome said Thursday, Steve McNair's retirement doesn't change the Ravens' draft plans. The team was planning to draft a quarterback reasonably high anyway. Trading up to get Matt Ryan of Boston College is unlikely. If Ryan falls to No. 8, there is no way the Ravens would pass him up. If Ryan doesn't fall to the Ravens, they might trade to the lower part of the first round to get the next best quarterback.
Manningham's stock same: Michigan wide receiver Mario Manningham remains a low first or a second-round consideration despite a few off-the-field questions. He's making visits to the Raiders and Bengals this week.
Washington could be rising: Southern Cal halfback Chauncey Washington has helped himself of late. His recent 4.35 40 time could mean he will be picked as high as the second round. Washington's rise could be similar to running back Chris Henry, who parlayed a fast 40 time and great workout into a second-round selection last season by the Tennessee Titans.
McAllister accepts pay cut: Deuce McAllister took a $2.2 million pay cut to stay with the Saints. Coming off his second major knee surgery, McAllister decided it was safer to take less pay than risk being cut. McAllister restructured his contract -- he was supposed to make $4.6 million -- coming off the injury. McAllister also restructured his 2009 salary. He's going to make a $3.2 million base, but has a $2 million roster bonus that will force the Saints to make a decision on whether to bring him back.
