Pat Knight: Contract talk soon

Pat Knight said late Tuesday that he will meet with Texas Tech athletic director Gerald Myers next week to finalize the five-year deal that he agreed to two years ago that was set to take into effect when his father, Bob Knight, resigned.

Knight said he and Myers talked Tuesday before the Red Raiders left for Waco for Wednesday's game at Baylor (ESPNU, 9 ET).

Knight said that Myers told him to "get through the storm, the media and sit down and work it out. I don't care. I just want to get through this, get it going and then we'll sit down and figure it out."

Knight said he was told in 2005 that his salary would be whatever the median is in the Big 12, a number he wasn't certain of right now.

Meanwhile, Knight said he promoted video coordinator Bubba Jennings to the role of assistant coach on Tuesday, replacing himself on the staff roster since Pat Knight slid into his father's role as head coach on Monday.

Pat Knight said his father popped in to see him on Tuesday before the team left.

"He looked great, he looked relieved and he looked relaxed," Pat Knight said. "He looked good, he looked at peace. He'll look better than we'll look in a week."

Knight said the team had a good practice Monday and Tuesday without his father.

He said the team is used to hearing his voice since he was often speaking throughout practice, even when his father was the head coach.

"We've always been a good practice team, but it hasn't carried over to games all the time," Knight said.

Knight said he didn't change any the game plan or the way the team practiced in advance of the Baylor game without his father present.

As for whether or not his father will coach again, Pat Knight said he didn't think he would. He said he anticipated that his father is done coaching.

• North Carolina starting sophomore point guard Ty Lawson shot around during Tuesday's practice but didn't participate in any team activities. His status for Wednesday's game against Duke remains uncertain with a game-time decision likely. If he can't go, then the Tar Heels will start senior Quentin Thomas for the second time in his career. The last time was the first game of the 2004-05 season, a loss at Santa Clara.

• Pepperdine is apparently getting closer to naming a permanent replacement for Vance Walberg, who resigned last month. Athletic director John Watson, who told ESPN.com last week that he is aggressively trying to fill the position, talked to former Hawaii coach Riley Wallace, who is extremely interested. Wallace is splitting his time living in Las Vegas and Hawaii, but likens the Malibu campus to Hawaii on the mainland. Wallace was abruptly run out last season by now former athletic director Herman Frazier.

One coach who would love to get a shot and knows the Pepperdine program extremely well is former San Diego coach Brad Holland. But Holland hasn't been officially contacted yet.

Meanwhile, there is increased speculation among coaching circles that former Pepperdine coach Tom Asbury could be returning to the school.
