The possible loss of Pro Bowl TE Antonio Gates, who dislocated his left big toe in last week's win over the Titans, would effect the Chargers in many ways as they prepare for a good Colts defense. Playing without Gates would place even more pressure on QB Philip Rivers and the Chargers' passing attack.

Simply put, Gates is the Chargers' top receiving threat and the best tight end in the NFL. His presence is as important as that of RB LaDainian Tomlinson in the Chargers' offensive schemes. Gates has averaged 79 catches over the last four seasons, which is very impressive for a tight end. Gates is big and athletic with excellent play speed for the position and the ability to attack all levels on the back end. He is a very good route-runner who can consistently separate versus man-to-man coverage, and also has a great knack for settling in soft spots in underneath zones. Plus, he is a big target in the red zone with excellent hands, receiving skills and tremendous run-after-catch ability in open space.
