Contract clause of the week

We've heard of MVP clauses -- but never an MGB clause. Well, we have now. Troy Percival's new contract with Tampa Bay calls for the Rays to furnish him with a "vintage automobile." It's right there in the fine print. So how'd that get in there?

Rays GM Andrew Friedman reports that when he and manager Joe Maddon met with Percival in California, Percival told them he was a long-time "motor head." Friedman then filed that away, and when he was, um, tuning up the team's offer, he hauled it out of that mental file and dropped it right into the bid -- in part to "differentiate the offer," and in part "to show we were listening."

Percival hasn't actually picked out the car in question yet. But as long as he keeps the bill under 40 grand, Friedman said he doesn't care what kind of vehicle it is.
