Pitt has heated up on the recruiting trail since upsetting West Virginia to end its disappointing 2007 season, and that heat just transformed to fire with a pledge from ESPN's No. 1-rated tight end prospect Jonathan Baldwin (Aliquippa, Pa.) on Monday. While the in-state Panthers remained in his top five from day one, landing this elite prospect over the defending National Champion Florida Gators is still a major recruiting accomplishment for Dave Wannstedt and the entire Panther program.
An intriguing prospect, we project Baldwin will develop into a great tight end prospect at the next level and have evaluated him accordingly. However, despite his good in-line blocking skills and tremendous frame for future physical development, Aliquippa head coach Mike Zmijanac explained to us last summer that Baldwin would concentrate on receiver during his senior season and desired to play wide out in college. It also appears to be the position Wannstedt has promised the 10.7 100 meter sprinter will start off at as a Pitt freshman.
