Blanton is an excellent athlete who can develop into a productive and versatile college safety. He needs to add size but can be physical and is a reliable tackler. He is strong in coverage, and given the chance to roam and make plays, the kid has a nose for the ball. Blanton is smart, and that is a key attribute of a safety. His instincts allow him to get into position and be a very productive defender.
It looks those who claimed that Charlie Weis didn't care about defense will be eating their words come national signing day. The addition of Corwin Brown as the defensive coordinator seems to have created a buzz among defensive recruits. A major sore spot for Notre Dame in the brief Weis area has been the secondary, and an addition like Blanton is an important step in trying to improve that weakness. Blanton is a well-rounded safety prospect whose experience in man coverage as a corner should make him an asset in the Irish secondary that has had trouble covering opponents.
