We've witnessed so many former All Pros bumble and sputter though pre- and
post-game shows to know that a great playing career doesn't necessarily
translate into a great broadcasting one. You know to whom I'm
referring -- Irvin, Siragusa, to name a few.
But fortunately, the next generation is getting a jumpstart. During three
days in late June, about 20 current and former players will be holed up in
the NFL Films studios in Mt. Laurel, N.J., for a broadcasting bootcamp.
They'll practice for both TV and radio, and will learn how to edit film,
write scripts, produce shows, and report from the sidelines, not to mention
swallow burps during telecasts, a task too difficult for one miked-up NFL
Network employee last year. The players will be schooled by some of the best
around: James Brown, Dick Vermeil, Ron Jaworski, among others.
