I'll lead this week's mailbag with the subject of the possible early signing period for college football.
From Darryl in Oakland, Calif.: When Urban Meyer said "every recruit wants text messaging badly, doesn't that sound a little lame. Like these kids need to be greeted and told how great they are constantly, worse yet guys like Urban Meyer are willing to suck up to that point. Sad view of our society.
Bruce Feldman: Maybe, but I think he does make a compelling argument about why an early signing period isn't such a great idea, when he says coaches will have less time to evaluate kids on and off the field than even before. And, I'll take it a step further: Since there are now APR (Academic Progress Rate) implications, the punishments are a lot higher if you sign a borderline character guy. All this would do is force schools to start recruiting even earlier than they do. This would move the cycle up six months right off the top.
