LeBron to pass ... or play?

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- You've heard of the Larry Bird exception. You've heard of the midlevel exception and perhaps of the biannual exception.

But you've never heard of the Chauncey Billups exception, which is a little-known card that LeBron James may choose to play this summer if he declines to participate in the Tournament of the Americas for Team USA.

A year ago, when Team USA managing director Jerry Colangelo was recruiting players to join the national team, he gave Billups and Michael Redd a pass on playing in the World Championship so long as they agreed to participate in the team's training camp.
