In the aftermath of the announcement that Josh Hancock was drunk when he was killed, the Cardinals issued a ban on alcohol in their home clubhouse; alcohol is available in the visiting clubhouse at Busch Stadium.
Major League Baseball sent out a league-wide e-mail on Wednesday, according to a high-ranking club official, to survey teams on their clubhouse alcohol policy. The Mets, Pirates, Yankees and Astros all have an alcohol ban in their home clubhouses, but not in their visiting clubhouses; the Yankees will serve visiting players, if asked. The Athletics banned the distribution of alcohol by club employees in either the home or visiting clubhouse, but the team is expected to ban alcohol altogether. As many as 12 to 15 teams have contacted the Athletics' general counsel about the team's policy, and some executives contacted Friday said their teams are considering changes.
