Cardinals GM Walt Jocketty is acknowledging the possibility that alcohol was involved in Josh Hancock's accident. Jocketty thinks Tony La Russa's DUI arrest doesn't diminish his ability to deal with this issue, writes Joe Strauss.
The other night, La Russa held a team meeting and warned his players about media members with agendas, after evidence began to mount that Hancock may have been drinking before his fatal accident early Sunday morning. And later, La Russa made a vague reference to reporters about swinging his fungo bat if questions he deemed insincere were asked -- and seemingly, he was referring to questions in regards to whether Hancock had been drinking.
Hancock was a valued member of the Cardinals, their friend, and it is an emotional time for the team. It was left to La Russa to dial a phone and tell Hancock's father that his son had been killed. It is their instinct to protect his memory; this is entirely understandable.
