Riley was drafted by Cowboys

MIAMI -- Once upon a time, Pat Riley was a pretty darned good football player. So good, in fact, that he was recruited by Bear Bryant at Alabama and was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys. As the first round of this year's NFL draft was taking place at Radio City Music Hall in New York, Riley took a few moments after practice Saturday to recall the day 40 years ago when he was finishing up his senior season at Kentucky and heard to news that Gil Brandt and Tex Schramm had used an 11th-round pick on him. "I was surprised, but philosophically Dallas at that time, from what I understand, was drafting former football players who were college basketball players but did not play football in college. They had some success with three or four players on the team who hadn't played in college, and they liked my athleticism and movement."
