Does Doug Mientkiewicz have a fighting chance to become the worst first baseman in Yankees history? According to Yankees historian Steven Goldman, "It's probably a toss-up between Johnny Sturm ... and Don Mattingly."

Johnny Sturm, sure. Babe Dahlgren comes to mind, too. But Donnie Baseball? Worst ever? That's an interesting question, but what's more interesting is this one: Mientkiewicz is in the lineup for his glove, but will his bat cost the Yankees a playoff spot this season? Goldman, a rabid but clear-eyed Yankees fan, thinks management will figure things out before any real damage is done.

I hope he's wrong.
