An opening lecture or two before some thoughts and notes from a great playoff weekend and assorted happenings around the NFL:

It was good to hear New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick explain Sunday after his team beat the Chargers what many fans and media types fail to recognize -- a quarterback is not going to play a perfect game.

Tom Brady and Peyton Manning combined to throw five interceptions this weekend and each could have had at least one or two more picks.

    Award-winning journalist Chris Mortensen is in his 16th year as ESPN's lead NFL Insider, reporter and analyst. Mort says his journalism career began once he realized that he no longer could compete in football, basketball and baseball beyond high school. He forsook his goal of being a teacher and coach when he realized how competitive sports journalism could be -- this path taken after he was a "first-round draft pick" by the U.S. Army, which he served honorably during the Vietnam conflict.
