Rifling through the mail

This week's hot topic in the mailbag was about the year-end rankings:

From Scott in Atlanta: How can you still rate Ohio State at No. 3? You say that LSU is the best team in the country but you rank them No. 4? OSU was an unproven, average football team that paid the price in the championship game when they were finally faced with some serious competition. They would have a difficult time defeating anyone else in your top 10.

Bruce Feldman: As I've said a few times this season, I feel like rankings have to be reflective of a body of work, more so than just "I think this is the better team." Ohio State did go to Austin and thump Texas and the Buckeyes also beat Michigan, which still was the second-best team in that league and the Wolverines did whup Notre Dame in South Bend and beat Wisconsin. Every team in the top 10 has flaws. USC lost to two unranked teams. LSU isn't exactly the most consistent team either. Remember, Ole Miss had the Tigers on the ropes in Baton Rouge on a Saturday night.
