Bucs spinning QB carousel

The fact the Bucs didn't sign any of the quarterbacks they worked out Tuesday makes you think Tampa is still trying to find a quarterback in a trade. Coach Jon Gruden said the team is going to continue to look. That probably means the Bucs are hoping for something better than Tommy Maddox, Todd Bauman and Jeff George to shake loose in the next week. The Bucs are in a bye week, so there isn't as much urgency to have a third quarterback in place until the Oct. 8 game in New Orleans.

Green's return uncertain: The prognosis on quarterback Trent Green's return to the Kansas City Chiefs is week-to-week after this Sunday's game against the 49ers. Herman Edwards isn't putting a timetable on Green's return from the concussion he suffered in Week 1. Green is feeling better but doctors aren't going to let him play until he's 100 percent.

Alexander hoping for quick comeback: Even though prayer didn't cover the crack in Shaun Alexander's fractured foot, you can see he is going to try to come back sooner than the 4-6 weeks he's scheduled to be out. Alexander wasn't in a boot Wednesday. He felt good enough to talk to coach Mike Holmgren about possibly letting him practice. Because the injury is a non-displacement fracture of the foot, the team won't risk playing him until the crack begins to heal. Expect Alexander to push for yet another CT scan to see if he can return after the bye week.

Seahawks capitalize on depth: How good is the depth of the Seahawks defense? Pretty good. One of the reasons they decided to let defensive tackle Marcus Tubbs have arthroscopic surgery on a sore knee was because they didn't even have Russell Davis on the active roster against the Giants. Davis -- a healthy inactive the first three weeks of the season -- is one of the league's better run stoppers. Tubbs could have probably played against the Bears on Sunday night, but the team and Tubbs felt the timing would be good to have him miss the Bears game and come back and play after the bye week. Surgery was going to happen at some point, and the team has the depth to let Tubbs do the surgery now and miss one game instead of two.
