KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- It's the kind of noise you can't prepare for.

You can pump crowd noise into practice. You can play "Rocky Top" on a loop all summer long. You can even simulate the matchup on a college football video game, cranking up the television volume, as California quarterback Nate Longshore did.

Then you get under center, look up and absorb a sea of orange and white, more than 106,000 rabid fans still hungover from last year's disappointment, and you freeze.
