Since we're officially in the home stretch of the recruiting season, time to look at who some of the best "closers" are. By closers, we're talking about head coaches who can sway a must-have recruit that is either on the fence or leaning to go someplace else. For this I talked to a bunch of coaches and asked who their schools really held their breath on when it came to getting the last at-bat. (Sorry for mixing in other sports analogies in here; I was driving back from Bristol and spent far too much time listening to talk radio in the car.) Anyhow, I also consulted some players for feedback as well.
Compiling this week's list was more of an effort than normal because the reactions were all over the map. Most coaches could give you names but really didn't even know why some guys were so good. One call, coming at about midnight last night, also produced what I'll call "The Rant of the Week" in regard to the validity of recruiting hype:
