In the U.S., Cammi Granato is the face of women's hockey. Last Wednesday night, longtime American women's coach Ben Smith decided to slap that face.

Inexplicably, four months after helping Team USA to its first World Championship gold medal, Granato was cut from the 2006 Olympic team. Apparently, the move totally blindsided Granato, who was planning to make the trip with the club to the Four Nations Cup tournament in Finland.

Smith and USA Hockey whispered the bizarre decision Thursday after the seven-day National Women's hockey festival in Lake Placid, N.Y. Smith also decided to jettison Shelly Looney, another veteran of America's national women's hockey team.
