Phil Mickelson took the PGA Championship Monday. It's the first time I sensed that people cheer for Phil and Tiger Woods in different ways. I believe the loud cheers for Tiger are a result of his golf achievements, while the cheers for Phil are for his golf and for his personality. It's easier to relate to Phil. He at least looks a little out of shape and his smile is the best in golf. As for Tiger, I believe that a lot of people don't know who he is because they haven't been let inside his emotions like they have with Phil. That's why I think Mickelson makes a better endorser than Woods does. He just comes off as more genuine.
On a related note, people always tell me they have a hard time believing Woods really drives a Buick. If Tiger doesn't, at least he hasn't blown his cover yet. On Sunday, the television cameras filmed him as he pulled into the players' parking lot driving -- you guessed it -- a Buick. It's not like Buick gives him a chance to mess up, though. They provide him with courtesy cars for every tournament.
Phelps welcomed in China: One year ago Sunday, Michael Phelps won his first of eight medals at the Olympics in Athens. After finishing with six more medals (five golds and a silver) at the recent World Championships in Montreal, Phelps traveled to China to fulfill obligations associated with his deal with Chinese electronics company Matsunichi.
